End-to-end encryption extension

For meetings that must not leave the room

Voice, faces and shared screen are encrypted on the speaker’s device and decrypted only on the listeners’ devices. The server forwards them without being able to read them: not even we who run it can.

Trusting the provider is a choice. End-to-end encryption makes it unnecessary.

A regular kMeeting call travels encrypted to the server in the EU, which routes it to participants. For a board meeting, a confidential negotiation or a call with a lawyer you can ask for more: that not even the server can listen in. With end-to-end encryption the keys are created and stay in participants’ browsers. When Ferrari Design discusses an acquisition, what is said and shown reaches only the people in the room in clear.

How it works

  1. Choose it when you create the meeting

With the extension active for your company and the privilege on your profile, tick “End-to-end encryption”. The choice applies to the whole meeting and cannot be removed later.

  2. Invite people by name

Colleagues join with their account and guests you invite by email, each with a personal link. There is no generic link to pass around.

  3. Compare the code out loud

The padlock in the room shows a verification code. If it matches for everyone, you are in the same encrypted group and nobody has slipped in between.

What is said in the room stays in the room. Even for us.

What you can do

  • The server forwards, it does not listen

Audio, video and screen sharing are encrypted with MLS (RFC 9420) and SFrame. Keys live only in browsers and change every time someone joins or leaves.

  • Ready for quantum computers

Key exchange combines ML-KEM-768 and X25519. Anyone recording the traffic today to decrypt it tomorrow would have to break both.

  • Every frame carries a signature

Every piece of audio and video is signed by its sender. Not even another participant can pass themselves off as you inside the meeting.

  • Never in clear by mistake

If a browser cannot encrypt, it does not get in: a message asks the user to update it. The meeting never falls back to an unprotected version.

  • Guests by personal invitation only

External guests join only with the invitation sent to their own email address, and keep the same protection as colleagues. If you prefer, you can exclude them entirely when creating the meeting.

Frequently asked questions

Is the chat end-to-end encrypted too?

No. End-to-end encryption protects audio, video and screen sharing. Chat messages go through the server as in regular meetings: for the most sensitive information, say it out loud instead.

Why can’t I record an end-to-end meeting?

Because recording is done by the server, and in this mode the server only receives encrypted data it cannot read. As a result there is no transcript or minutes either. If you need them, use a regular meeting.

How many people can take part?

Up to 100 at the same time. With post-quantum key exchange every join and leave renews everyone’s keys: beyond that threshold it would get slow. If the room is full, newcomers see a clear message.

Who can create end-to-end meetings?

People whose user type has the privilege, in a company that has activated the extension. That way the administrator decides who really needs it, for example management or the legal department.

What is the verification code for?

It is an extra check. Every participant sees the same code if everyone is in the same encrypted group; reading it aloud at the start confirms that nobody has slipped in between you. The code changes only when the people present change.
