CardDAV
When the phone rings, you already know who it is
The Kontacts address book reaches the Contacts app on iPhone and Mac, or Thunderbird, with nothing to install. A number saved at the office shows up on the phone, one added from the phone shows up in Kontacts.
The supplier’s number no longer lives on one person’s phone
The phone is where contacts are really needed: you call from the site, answer in the car, text from the train. If the company address book lives only in the browser, everyone ends up keeping their own copy on their phone, and the copies drift apart. With CardDAV the phone’s address book and Kontacts are one and the same: they update on their own, in both directions.
How it works
-
Generate an app password
In the Kontacts Settings, under CardDAV, you find the “CardDAV URL” and your username, which is your email. Press “Generate password” and copy the password that appears: “Copy this password now. It will not be shown again.”
-
Add the account on the device
On iPhone or Mac you add a CardDAV account in the Contacts settings; in Thunderbird, a new CardDAV address book. Paste the address, email and app password, and that’s it.
-
Work wherever you are
Your address books appear on the device, each with its own name. Fix a number on the phone and you find it corrected in Kontacts; a colleague adds a contact to one of your address books and it reaches your phone.
The company address book, in the pocket of whoever uses it.
What you can do
-
iPhone, Mac and Thunderbird
Kontacts speaks CardDAV, the open standard for address books: it works with Apple’s Contacts app on iPhone, iPad and Mac, with Thunderbird and with other programs that support CardDAV. No app to install.
-
Both ways
Add, edit or delete a contact from the phone and the change reaches Kontacts; the same happens the other way round. Only changed entries travel, so even a large address book updates quickly.
-
One password per device
The phone never knows the password you sign in to Kamzan with: it uses an app password generated for the purpose. Create one for the iPhone, one for the Mac, and each can be revoked on its own without touching the others.
-
Lost phone? Just revoke
With “Revoke password”, that device immediately stops reading the address book. Your sign-in password stays the same, and the other devices keep working.
-
Read-only where it matters
System address books, the ones other Kamzan apps keep up to date, reach the phone read-only: you look them up and call, but an accidental edit from the phone does not change them.
-
Whoever leaves the company leaves the address book
If a person is suspended from the company, their app passwords stop opening that company’s contacts, even on the phone in their pocket. The administrator also decides which user types may use CardDAV.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work with Android, Outlook or Google Contacts?
Kontacts uses CardDAV, which is supported natively by Apple’s Contacts app and by Thunderbird. Outlook and Google Contacts do not read CardDAV address books, and on Android you need an app that adds CardDAV support. Kontacts can still be used from the phone’s browser.
I lost the app password: where can I find it?
It cannot be found again: Kontacts shows it only once and then keeps only an encrypted fingerprint, so nobody can read it back. Generate a new one, enter it on the device and revoke the old one.
Which address books do I see on the phone?
Your own address books, including the one that collects contacts from the other apps, and the system address books of the apps you use, the latter read-only. If you work for several companies in Kamzan, each one’s CardDAV address shows only that company’s contacts.
Do I need to install a Kamzan app on the phone?
No. The contacts land in the Contacts app you already have, so you find them when you call, when a call comes in and when you write a message. To manage address books and sharing, open Kontacts in the browser, which adapts to the phone’s screen.
