Calls
When writing is not enough, the call starts from the chat
Ten messages to agree on a quote can be settled in two minutes of talking. In kTalk you press “Start call” in the conversation: it rings for your colleagues, and whoever accepts joins an end-to-end encrypted kMeeting room, open only to the people in the conversation.
No link to copy, no invitation to send
The call is born from the conversation and inherits its participants: the kMeeting room admits only the members of that chat, and if you add someone to the group in the meantime, they can join too. The media is end-to-end encrypted, even when it passes through the call server, and no anonymous guest can get in. Afterwards the conversation keeps the record: who called, how long it lasted, who did not answer.
How it works
-
Press “Start call”
The button sits at the top of every direct message and every group. kTalk creates the kMeeting room and sends the invitation inside the conversation, encrypted like the other messages.
-
It rings for your colleagues
Recipients see “Marco is calling you” with Accept and Decline, also as a notification on their phone. In groups an “Incoming group call” arrives and everyone joins when they can.
-
You talk in kMeeting
The call opens in a separate window, with the kMeeting waiting room to check camera and microphone. The chat stays right beside it, and at the end “Call ended” appears in the thread with the duration.
From chat to voice in one tap, without taking anyone outside the company.
What you can do
-
From direct messages and groups
You call a colleague from your direct message, or the whole group from its conversation. In announcement channels the button is not there: those are for one-way communication.
-
A real ring, on the phone too
The invitation arrives as an incoming call, with a push notification and Accept and Decline buttons. If nobody answers within 45 seconds, “Missed call” stays in the thread.
-
Group calls
In a group the call stays open: you can see how many people are in it, and latecomers press “Join”. Those who cannot make it choose “Ignore” and the call goes on without them.
-
Only people in the conversation
The room admits the chat’s members and nobody else, not even a colleague from the company who happened to know its address. Anonymous guests stay out.
-
End-to-end encrypted
Audio and video are encrypted between participants even when they pass through the call server, in every call started from kTalk. The chat server does not even keep the room’s address.
-
The record stays in the thread
Every call leaves a card in the conversation: started by whom, ended after how long, declined, missed, busy. Whoever reopens the chat knows what happened.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need kMeeting to call?
Yes. kTalk calls use kMeeting rooms, so whoever starts the call must have kMeeting active. Without it, the “Start call” button is visible but greyed out, with an explanation of why.
Can I call from a channel?
No. Channels are for announcements, where only administrators and moderators write: calls are started from direct messages and groups. If you need to discuss it out loud, open a group with the right people.
Can a colleague outside the conversation join?
No. The room admits only the conversation’s members. If you need someone else, add them to the group: from that moment they can also join the ongoing call.
Are calls encrypted even if the chat is not end-to-end?
Yes. The kMeeting room created by kTalk is always end-to-end encrypted, regardless of the mode of the conversation the call starts from.
