Polls and timing

Decide in a minute, remind at the right moment, let what should not stay disappear

The poll ends the discussion about the meeting date. The scheduled message reminds everyone to log their hours every Friday at 4 pm, even if nobody thinks of it. Disappearing messages delete on their own what is needed for a day and not forever.

Thirty messages to pick a date

“Tuesday works for me”, “I am out on Tuesday”, “what about Thursday?”: in a group a simple choice turns into an endless thread, and someone still gets left out. The same goes for reminders that depend on one person’s memory and for temporary codes that stay in the chat for years. Polls, scheduled sends and timers take these jobs off people and hand them to kTalk.

How it works

  1. Ask with a poll

Write the question and up to 12 options, and decide whether people can pick one answer or several. Votes add up in real time; when that is enough, the creator or an administrator closes the poll.

  2. Schedule the send

Write the message, choose “Schedule…”, date and time, and a repeat if you want one: every day, every week, every month, up to every year. Until it is sent only you can see it, and you can cancel it.

  3. Put a timer on the chat

Turn on disappearing messages: 24 hours, 7, 30 or 90 days, or a duration in hours of your choice. From then on new messages vanish on their own when the time is up, counted from when they were sent.

Time works for you, not against the chat.

What you can do

  • Single or multiple choice polls

“Where are we eating on Friday?” needs one answer; “Which days are you free?” needs several. Up to 12 options per poll, with the total number of voters always in view.

  • Who voted, in black and white

With “See who voted” you know who chose what. A closed poll stays in the chat with the result and the name of whoever closed it.

  • Reminders that repeat

Every day, every week or every two, every month, every three or six months, every year, always at the same time until you stop the repeat. If you choose the 31st, in shorter months it goes out on the last day of the month.

  • Goes out even with the computer off

The queue of scheduled messages lives on the server: your device can be off, travelling or out of battery. In the chat you find messages “Pending” and, if something did not go out, those “Not sent”, with the reason.

  • Disappearing messages that really disappear

When the time is up, text and attachments are deleted from every device and from the server, and excluded from backups. Each bubble shows how long it has left, and messages sent before the timer do not change.

  • The timer is set by whoever manages the chat

In a direct message either person can set it; in a group only an administrator. Every change appears in the chat — “Paolo set disappearing messages: 7 days” — so nobody is surprised.

Frequently asked questions

Can I schedule a message in an end-to-end chat?

No. Scheduled messages only exist in chats encrypted with the company’s key: they are not available in end-to-end conversations, just like editing messages already sent.

How far ahead can I schedule?

From one minute to one year. If the message repeats, it carries on at the same time until you choose “Stop repeating”; a single send is cancelled with “Cancel send”.

If I turn on disappearing messages, do old ones disappear too?

No. The timer applies to messages sent from that moment on; those already in the chat stay as they are. If you turn it off, messages that already had it still disappear when their time is up.

Does the deletion hold stop disappearing messages?

No. The hold suspends the automatic retention set by the company, but the disappearing-message timer is a promise made to participants, and it still applies. If a conversation has to be kept, it is better not to turn on disappearing messages in it.
