Attachments, voice, documents
Work files travel in the work chat, encrypted
The quote to show in a hurry, the photo from the site, the voice note while you drive: in kTalk they all go through the same conversation, encrypted, without ending up in a personal phone’s gallery. And when a document matters, it is already in Files.
A file sent on WhatsApp is never found again
It stays on the phone of whoever received it, mixed in with holiday photos, and leaves with them when they change jobs. In kTalk the attachment is encrypted on the sender’s device, with a new key for every file, and reaches the server already unreadable. Whoever is in the conversation opens it, finds it again in the Files tab of the details, and if needed saves it to Files, with the company’s folders, permissions and versions.
How it works
-
Attach from your computer or from Files
Drag the file into the conversation or choose “Attach from Files” and take it from the personal or company space. The file is encrypted on your device before it leaves, with a key that is valid for that file only.
-
Recipients open it right there
Photos arrive with a thumbnail, PDFs can be browsed page by page with zoom, voice messages play along their waveform. Nothing to download just to take a look.
-
What matters ends up in Files
With “Save to Files” you choose the folder and the document enters the company archive. And if a discussion is about a specific file, you open it right on that file: you find it again in the “Files and folders” section.
The document stays with the company, not in someone’s photo gallery.
What you can do
-
One key for every file
Every attachment is encrypted on the sender’s device with a key generated for it, in every conversation. Anyone reading the storage would find only meaningless bytes.
-
The company sets the limit
Each attachment can be up to 100 MB, and the administrator can raise or lower the cap. With user types you also decide who can send attachments and who cannot.
-
PDFs and photos without downloading
The built-in viewer opens PDFs with pages and zoom, images open full-screen from their thumbnail. When needed, “Download” is always there.
-
Voice messages
With the “Voice messages” extension you record and send a voice note from the conversation; recipients see the waveform and listen. It is protected like the other messages, and this too is granted by user type.
-
Encrypted copy or link from Files
From “Attach from Files” you send an encrypted copy of the document or a public link, if the “Public links” extension is active on Files. Files placed in the vault on Files stay where they are: they cannot be attached.
-
The chat on the document
From Files you open a conversation linked to a file or a folder, with the people working on it. In kTalk you find it in the “Files and folders” section, and “Open in Files” takes you back to the document.
-
Everything findable in the details
The details of every conversation have the Info, Media, Files, Voice and Links tabs: the document from three weeks ago turns up without scrolling the whole thread.
Frequently asked questions
Are attachments encrypted in chats without end-to-end too?
Yes. The file is encrypted by the sender’s device in every conversation, with its own key. That key travels inside the message, which in server chats is encrypted at rest with the company’s key and in end-to-end chats can be read only by the participants’ devices.
How large can an attachment be?
By default 100 MB per file. The limit is a company setting: the administrator adapts it to the way you work. If the file is larger, kTalk says so before uploading it.
Do I need Files to use attachments?
No: attachments, photos, PDFs and voice messages work with kTalk alone. Files adds “Attach from Files”, “Save to Files” and chats linked to a document, for those who also have Files active.
Are voice messages included?
They are an extension, “Voice messages”: the company activates it and then decides with user types who can record them. Receiving and listening to voice messages, on the other hand, is for all members of the conversation.
