Editing a document

There are two ways, and the difference is where the document opens.

Editing it inside Kamzan

To open a Word, Excel or PowerPoint file in Kamzan’s editor:

  1. Right-click on the file in the list — or use the three dots button at the end of the row.
  2. Hover over «Edit»: it has an arrow on the right and opens a submenu.
  3. Choose «Edit online».

The document opens full screen and saves itself. It is the only way you can work on it with other people at the same time: while you type you see who else is in there.

You also get there by double-clicking the file, which opens the preview: from there the «Actions» button, at the top right of the window, leads to the same entries.

Editing it with the program on your computer

Same path — right-click → «Edit» → «Open locally» — but the file opens with the program you have installed (Word, Excel, Photoshop, whatever it is). Every time you save, the file comes back up to Kamzan by itself as a new version.

You need Kamzan Desktop installed, and the entry only appears if your organisation has turned it on.

It is worth it when the document has things the browser cannot handle: macros, unusual formats, or simply because you are faster in your own program.

Other kinds of file

Still in the «Edit» submenu:

  • PDFs — «Annotate PDF» to write on them (pen, highlighter, text, arrows), «Edit PDF» to change their text, «Fill in the form» if it is a form with fields to fill in.
  • Text, code, JSON, Markdown files — «Open in the text editor».

I can’t edit

  • The file is locked by someone else — there is a padlock on the row; see the page about the locked file.
  • The folder is archived — read-only for everyone, administrators included, by design.
  • You have read-only access — click the «Your access» chip in the bar above the list, on the left: it tells you what you can do in there.
  • The editor extension is missing — «Edit online» is only there if your organisation has turned it on.
